Update: We have switched blogs to comply with CBE approved blogs. Today we did some work with shape and space. We cut out shapes and had to figure out how to put them into a square. We then had to try to find as many different ways to make shapes with the pattern blocks as possible. After P.E. we read a book called Hello Lighthouse. It taught us about lighthouses and lighthouse keepers in the past. Ask your son what they learned about lighthouses. At the end of the day we had a STEM challenge to design and build lighthouses.

This morning we learned how to make comics! It is going to be a new center during Daily 5 time. During math, we started working on a new problem. We had to figure out how many polar bears, snow owls, and penguins there could be in a zoo if there were 64 legs in total. This afternoon we did a science experiment. We poured hot water, room temperature water, and ice water into glasses, and had to read the temperature on the thermometer on each. While we were doing that, we noticed that the metal around the thermometer in the hot water got very hot, and the metal around the thermometer in the cold water got very cold. That got us talking about the difference between materials that are insulators, and materials that are conductors. Ask your son what a conductor is, and what an insulator is to see what he learned. January 8, 2020

Today we continued working on Shape and Space in Math. We had to cut out different shapes and figure out how we could fit them into a square. Then we had to try to build and create animals out of the shape tiles. This afternoon we went to the library. We are going to start going to the library every Wednesday afternoon to exchange our books. After the library, we started learning about lobster fishing, so that we can start building our own lobster traps!
